Watch Out for These Signs of a Broken AC Before Summer Arrives

Signs You Need AC Repair Before the Start of Summer

Now that spring is in full swing and the days are getting warmer, air conditioner repair techs worldwide are beginning to see their schedules fill up rapidly. After the long winter, those long-neglected AC units are getting kicked into high gear once more. And any problems or weaknesses that haven’t yet been addressed with spring maintenance will begin to manifest themselves.

The trouble is, homeowners don’t always realize there’s a problem until it’s too late and the unit stops working entirely - which usually happens on the hottest, muggiest day of the summer. Before that day arrives, be on the lookout for these common signs that an AC needs repairs.

Weak Air Flow or Blowing Hot Air

Perhaps the most common signs of a malfunction are if the AC is blowing warm air or hardly any air at all. In most cases, a frozen evaporator coil is a culprit. This can occur when airflow is constricted by a dirty air filter, when dust and debris accumulate on the coils (again, dirty air filter), or if the refrigerant levels are low. The ice that forms on the coils hinders the cooling function and obstructs airflow.

Other possible causes include a dirty condenser coil in the outdoor unit, leaky or crushed ductwork, a faulty or dirt-clogged blower fan, or electrical problems. A leak in the refrigerant lines is often to blame when the AC is blowing hot air. Chemical refrigerant is very dangerous, so it’s best to call a professional immediately if this symptom arises.

AC Unit Is Leaking Fluid

Homeowners should also keep an eye out for any liquid coming from the unit or pooling underneath it. This most often occurs when the ice formed on the evaporator coils begins to melt and drip from the indoor unit. If the evaporator coils are not frozen, the water may be coming from a damaged or rusted condensate drain pan under the coils.

Or, as is often the case, from the condensate drain line itself. Algae and fungi can develop inside this small pipe and clog it up, causing any condensation from the coils to collect and eventually overflow the drain pan.

Loud or Unusual NoisesPerson listening intently, emphasizing the importance of recognizing strange noises from HVAC units as signs of potential issues.

Another common sign of trouble (and one that’s hard to ignore) is if the unit - indoor or outdoor - is making strange sounds. Banging or clattering usually indicates that a part is loose or broken and is rattling around inside the unit. Rhythmic squeaking typically means that the blower fan is loose or needs a new bearing or motor. Loud buzzing can be caused by anything, from dirty condenser coils to a failing blower motor.

High-pitched whistling or screeching most often indicates a refrigerant leak or an over-pressurized compressor - both of which are highly hazardous and require urgent attention. Any homeowners that hear or see any of the signs of danger mentioned above would do well to call a professional straight away - before any further damage can ensue.
