Reasons to Look Into Dehumidifiers

Defining Humidity

Breathing high-quality air when indoors is an important component of health. Most people spend a considerable amount of time thinking about what they eat and drink, but most don’t give a second thought to what they are taking into their bodies each time they breathe. A huge part of the body’s immune system is in the lungs and skin, both of which are affected by humidity

Living with too much or too little humidity is detrimental to good health, but it is also a matter of comfort. This month, take a moment and reflect on the feeling in the home and general health. If the home is constantly muggy and respiratory problems are prevalent, it may be time to consider the air quality improvements one can make by installing a dehumidifier

How Do Dehumidifiers Work?nbsp;

humidifierHumidity is simply a measure of the moisture dissolved in the air. Generally, warmer air can carry more humidity, while cooler air carries less. Humidity and suspended dust in the air make up the components of air quality. While filters remove dust from the air, dehumidifiers work on the other half of improved air quality: humidity.

Dehumidifiers work by reducing the amount of moisture in the air. They accomplish this by the same process that causes a cold glass to sweat moisture in warm air. In a dehumidifier, refrigerant expands in a coil very similar to an evaporator coil in an air conditioner, causing the coil to become cold. Moist air blows across this coil, and the humidity condenses onto the cold metal. The dry air is blown back into the room, and the moisture is dumped into a waste bucket or drained into a home’s drainage system.

Signs That Dehumidifiers are a Good Idea in a Home

humidifierSince dehumidifiers are similar to air conditioners, it is obvious that air conditioners also work to remove humidity from the home. However, it is a very common problem that air conditioners simply can’t keep up with the moisture load. Some of the factors that influence humidity in a home are:
  • Local weather conditions
  • How often people in the home cook
  • Showering and hygiene habits

When humidity is allowed to build up in a home the signs are:

  • Mold problems
  • Musty odors
  • Condensation on windows, especially in the winter
  • Clammy or muggy air
  • High cooling bills
  • Respiratory problems

Benefits of Dehumidifier Installation

Air inside a home can become a dead zone that collects much more moisture and pollutants than someone may be exposed to outdoors. A dehumidifier is an important part of combating low-quality air that causes discomfort. Some of the benefits that people notice when they install dehumidifiers are:

  • Increased comfort
  • Lower cooling bills
  • Fewer mold problems
  • Fresher air
  • Better lung and skin health

Dehumidifiers can be used as individual portable units or installed as whole-home systems as part of a comfort and clean-air strategy.
