With Thanksgiving coming in just a few weeks, Americans’ minds are turning toward family gatherings, food, and gratitude. One of the great things about living in such a prosperous country is that people can be comfortable in their homes no matter the temperature outside. 

Being thankful for working heat and air conditioning, and those qualified to repair and replace these units, is something to add to what is sure to be a long list.

Now that cooler weather has started blowing in, it is time to start thinking about preparing for the bitter cold that winter in New England brings. Without a proper tune-up, a furnace can be working too hard and not keeping a home warm enough. A poorly heated home can result in frozen pipes and all the collateral damage that results. It can also result in poor sleep and sky-rocketing energy bills.

  • Flame Color: Natural gas flames are blue. If a furnace displays an orange, red, or yellow flame, there may be a problem.

  • Strange Noises: Loud popping or banging noises may be a natural result of expanding and contracting, but it may be time to call the professionals if people notice new sounds.
  • Soot: This black dust can accumulate around the flue and vents. This can be a sign of a serious problem.
  • Water Leaks/Moisture Build: This can result from filter and flue problems.

Poor indoor air quality can result in mold and mildew growth and perpetuate the growth of other allergens such as dust mites. When the air gets drier during the winter months, a technician may recommend a whole-home humidifier to mitigate some of the problems (both for personal health and home furnishing) that can result.
